The Boker Boys make history

The Wexford CBS senior 4x100m relay team made a little bit of history in Tullamore on Saturday 3rd of June when they won the Senior Schools national relay.

No school from county Wexford had ever won any relay titles at the Nationals in either boys or girls events since the formation of the schools association in 1916, so the CBS are the 1st in 101 years.

The team was David MacDonald, Luke O Neill, Sam O Neill and Aaron Smith.

In a thrilling relay final the CBS boys just edged out Bandon Grammar School from Cork who were bidding for their 3rd consecutive title.

The Boker Boys showed their class with some very slick baton changes, David McDonald got the boys off to a splendid start, Luke O’Neill kept up the pace in the 2nd leg following by a fine bend run by brother Sam, with Aaron Smith in a memorable last 100m securing the elusive title by 0.03 seconds.

The lads were presented with their medals and the perpetual cup.   The CBS Wexford will now be inscribed on this cup alongside such prestigious schools as Blackrock College, Belvedere, Rockwell and Terenure.

These 4 lads have now won every relay at every level in athletics, Community Games, Athletics Ireland and now an Irish Schools title breaking many Irish records along the way.

The 4 boys have being together since they were under 10s and are also very good at their own individual events sprinting and hurdling.

David Macdonald also picked up a bronze medal in the senior boys 100m running a great time of 10.75 secs and Aaron finished just outside the medals in 4th place in the Senior hurdles.

Another Menapians member Nathan Murphy finished 9th in the Junior discus.   Finally St Killians Jack Forde was unlucky not to medal in the Junior Shot Putt and high jump finishing 4th in the Shot Putt and 5th in the High Jump.   The CBS also finished 3rd overall school in the senior boys.

The schools track and field season kicked off the last fortnight with the South Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in Waterford.   There was success for the school both in track and field events.   In the field events, Gergely Pap took gold in both the junior shot putt and hammer.   Jack Forde took silver in the junior shot putt and followed that up with a win in the Junior High Jump.  Both Gergely and Jack ensured qualification for the Leinsters in both events.   Nathan Murphy also guaranteed qualification for the Leinsters with a silver in the discus.   Conor Keane and Sean White had top 6 finishes in the 1500m and 800m respectively.   Paul Freeman also had a top 5 finish in the 3000m race.   The seniors enjoyed success the following Thursday with impressive runs across the sprinting events.   David McDonald won the 200m, Aaron Smith won the 110m hurdles and Luke and Sam O’Neill also ran well in the sprints.   The 4×100m relay team also qualified for the Leinster Finals with Luke and Sam O’Neill, Leon Nolan-Cullen, Aaron Smith and Conor Brennan all helping the team to silver.   The team will hopefully have David McDonald back for the relay at the Leinsters to bolster their chances of further success.
